This year has been a very successful one for our hockey teams, the first XI losing only one match and both junior teams being undefeated. Lawnswood also won the Inter-Schools Hockey Rally, the first XI defeating West Leeds in the final.
The standard of play has been high, colours having been re-awarded to J. Pritchard, S. McLean (capt.), J. Hooton, and new ones gained by S. Foster (vice-capt.), M. Broadhead, E. Walker, J. Allen and A. Robertson. Five girls were chosen to represent Leeds at the Yorkshire hockey trials and of these J. Pritchard was chosen to play for Yorkshire Juniors.
This year has also seen the start of an Inter-Form hockey tournament which has generated much enthusiasm and raised the general standard of play. The eventual winners were S.VI.Sc., closely followed by III.10 and V.17.
The netball teams have been enthusiastic as always and the juniors have shown great promise. Many matches were cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. Out of those played, the first team were unsuccessful, but not through lack of effort. The second and junior teams did better and we hope they will continue to do so next season.
Colours were awarded to Judith Hooton and Gillian Maybank (capt.).
The members of the swimming teams have been keen and enthusiastic once again and entered for Leeds Schools swimming events.
In the galas a number of girls have won certificates and we gained several individual places, one first, two seconds and three thirds. Our Intermediate Squadron League came third,
Our senior team (B. Atkinson, M. Cousins, P. Hardwick, Susan Hardwick) came first in the free-style relay in the Leeds Schools' Swimming Championships, winning the shield presented by the "Yorkshire Evening Post" and we drew with Intake for the first place in the Squadron League.
Bronze medallions were awarded to Elizabeth McLarty, Brenda Reeves and Annette Robertson. Thirteen girls gained the Advanced Safety Awards and five the Preliminary Safety Awards.
This year we have had a successful tennis season. There have been frequent changes in both the first and second teams owing to the equal standard of play of many couples. All the matches have been thoroughly enjoyed.
True to form we were again defeated in the James Graham Cup, losing to Roundhay High School, but only after a very long and hard fought match.
Thanks go to the few faithful umpires and ballboys. Judith Hooton captained the teams, assisted by Elizabeth Walker.
Team rounders have been much enjoyed this season and practices well attended. The senior team only played one match, but the better weather made it possible for the under fifteen team to play six matches and the under fourteen, five.
House rounders were played and Graham were the eventual winners.
The athletics team have again had a highly successful season with the most notable achievement being that twelve girls were chosen to represent Leeds in the Yorkshire Schools' Championships at Hull which is double the number chosen last year. The girls chosen were K. Stansby, S. White, L. Tasker, J. Humphrey, A. Robertson, B. Newell, S. Foster, M. Broadhead, M. Cooper, G. Maybank, J. Hooton and M. Curle. Individual successes were gained by L. Tasker (3rd), S. Foster (3rd) and K. Stainsby (2nd-relay).
We had two matches this season, a senior match against Leeds Training College and Leeds Women's Athletic Club and a junior match against Matthew Murray and Cross Green Schools. They were both very enjoyable and some excellent results were produced by our teams.
The Leeds City Championships were held separately this year for juniors and seniors and we gained nine first places, nine second places and three third places and won two of the Relay Trophies.
Finally, on behalf of all the school teams we would like to express our thanks to the games staff. Miss Goodall, Miss Brown, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Rowe for their help and encouragement throughout the year and wish all the teams success next year.
GILLIAN MAYBANK, SHEILA McLEAN, JUDITH HOOTON, ANNE GRAY, SVI.
The Swimming Sports were held on March 8th and we were honoured in having Mr. Derek Gill, a successful channel swimmer, to judge the style and diving events.
The tables were completely turned on Garbutt this year—they came bottom by 1½ points to Roscoe with Graham second and Stowell the winners.
In general the standard of swimming was very high, with some promising performaces by the juniors and particularly exciting finishes in the team races.
Our thanks go to all the games staff, especially Mrs. Johnston, who organised the gala and made it such an enjoyable afternoon for both competitors and spectators.
JULIA BOSWELL, SVI.
Sports Day this year was a disaster! What began as a steady drizzle ended as a steady downpour. Consequently several events had to be postponed until the following Thursday.
With Graham and Roscoe positioned very closely, Graham with 215 points, Roscoe with 208½, it was quite possible for a change of position as was the similar case between Stowell and Garbutt. Stowell was lying third with 161½ points and Garbutt fourth having 142.
At the first possible opportunity. Sports Day was concluded by completing four relays and five field events and the eventual results were as follows.
First Roscoe 287½ points Second Graham 273 points Third Stowell 185½ points Fourth Garbutt 171 points
The girls showed extreme sportsmanship and interest in this exciting, if unusual, contest with the final result that we congratulate Roscoe on their victory.
JEAN WALLACE, SVI.
