The A.G.M. was held on Wednesday, 1st December, 1965 and after the usual business of the meeting, Miss Elizabeth Dean gave us a most interesting talk on her experiences in Nigeria with the V.S.O.
The Dinner, which is the main function in our calendar, was held at Castle Grove Masonic Hall on Thursday, 21st April, 1966, the guest of honour being Miss Joyce Lenton, who proposed the toast, "The School, Past, Present and Future". This was responded to by Miss Longworth and seconded by the Head Girl, Pat Thurston and the Vice Head Girl, Judith Curry. The evening concluded with musical items arranged by Mrs. K. Whitaker.
The "Old Girls" would like to congratulate one of their members, Miss Phyllis Dowley on receiving the M.B.E. in the New Year's Honours List.
Once more we began our year's activities with an informal gathering to welcome "new" parents. After being received by Miss Longworth, introduced to members of staff and other parents (tea and biscuits of course being served) a film show was given by Mrs. Pickering on "The History of Lawnswood" which was most interesting.
In December Mr. Peter C. Love of the Child Guidance Centre in Leeds showed a film entitled "The Teens", followed by a lively and informal discussion on the problems of parents v. children. Quite a consolation to hear that others have problems !
Later in December we were all deeply shocked and so terribly sorry to hear of Mr. Fletcher's sudden death. He had been a hard working Committee member for eight years, and served as Chairman from 1961-62. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mrs. Fletcher and her three children.
In February our first experiment of a joint dance with the Modern School was a huge success, and will be repeated again this year. Our grateful thanks are due to Mr. Baxter, the sub-committees and pupils from both schools, for all the hard work and organisation behind the scenes to make it such a happy evening.
The following month, on March 9th, our Committee raised over £44 0s. 0d. for OXFAM, and once again we thank the Leeds Modern School parents for their support in selling tickets. It was a delightful evening when the Leeds Arts Orchestra came to school to give a programme of light classical music, with excellent pianoforte solos by our own Miss Wheeler (as she was then). How popular it proved to be, was obvious by the large audience. Mrs. E. N. Coverdale, organiser of OXFAM, Leeds Branch, sent her warm and sincere thanks for this worthy effort.
Our annual "Careers Evening" was held in April with four speakers on varying subjects, all, once again, useful and informative. Miss G. Smith spoke on "Careers in Institutional Management", Mr. Keith Grime and Mr. Hutton combined on "Town Planning", Dr. R. V. Buckley on "Electrical Engineering for Girls" and Miss Millicent Strachan on "Journalism".
In May we had a theatre party to the Harrogate Opera House to see "Robert's Wife" by St. John Ervine. A coach left school at 6-30 p.m. and what a delightful evening it proved to be. Such a pleasure to recapture the, unfortunately dying atmosphere of the "live" theatre. The play was extremely well done, and with coffee at the interval, and supper at the end, tastefully served, everyone agreed about how enjoyable it had been.
On May 2nd, Mr. John H. Taylor, the Chief Education Officer, came to address a packed audience of parents on the Leeds Scheme for the reorganisation of secondary education. After Mr. Taylor had outlined the scheme, parents were invited to comment and ask questions.
The last event of our social calendar was Miss Longworth's meeting in July for the parents of new girls. Mr. Baxter welcomed new members, Mrs. Boothman and Mrs. Petch, helped by the Ladies' Committee, ran a sale of second hand clothing and sports equipment, and served refreshments. Mr. Plumtree and Mr. Shaw took subscriptions for the Parents' Association and Prize and Libraries Fund.
Unfortunately this year we have nine valuable committee members retiring, as their daughters have left school. We give our grateful and sincere thanks to them all, for their help has been invaluable over many years and we would like to invite "new" parents to replace them, particularly those of first, second and third form pupils, for it has been a happy and co-operative committee, who have enjoyed working together to raise funds, which are, after all, used for the benefit of the pupils.
M. A. WEBSTER (Hon. Secretary).
